WHAT?
Hi everyone, my name is She Mei, 22 years old this year and I am an undergraduate from University of Malaya, undertaking Environmental Science and Management program.
On March 2, 2015, I will be leaving to Sabah for a seven-week long expedition in a mission to help the community and environment. My intention of joining this expedition is to create a better living for rural communities as well as contribute to environmental development.
My roles as a volunteer in Sabah are as followed:
(1) Building gravity-fed water system
(2) Kindergarten construction
(3) Developing trekking trails
(4) Conservation work in Class 1 Protected Rainforest
WHY EXPEDITION?
I have read about Raleigh International and their noble initiative in the newspaper when I was 16 years old. It did spark my interest to join back then but it never came true because I was unable to raise fund as much as RM4,500, or I should say, I was chickened out to even try to fundraise.
Now that I have become more matured and confident with my own ability, I would like to seize this opportunity to go for a meaningful expedition, in line with the motto that “You Only Live Once.”
Besides the reason that this expedition can provide a unique volunteering experience in community and environmental work, what interest me to participate is also because of my intention to feed my green thirst.
I have always been amazed by the gigantism and mystery in rainforest, serenity and tranquillity from the surrounding and the peace away from the hustle bustle of the city. In another words, I enjoy staying in the forest and lead a simple life where hammock is my bed, river is my toilet, walking is my transportation mode, animal is the other road-user, tent is my house and sun rise is the alarm. Also, I am proud of my own country for having such a green treasure and that triggers my interest to explore and learn from Mother Nature.
Going for an expedition will also enhance my personal soft skills before I embark on my future career. This expedition will train my communication skill, team work and also resilience in challenging situation. Besides that, I anticipate to make friends with volunteers coming from around the world.
Expedition is certainly something meaningful and imperative for me as it is a life-time opportunity that I do not want to miss. Therefore, I sincerely hope that you can help me realize my dream by chipping a small amount of donation!
OTHER FUNDRAISING INITIATIVE
In the past two months, I have been collecting recyclables around my campus as one of the way to raise fund. Although the profit is not abundant, I am satisfied with what I have done because I get to promote awareness in my community on the importance of recycling practice.

Some might think that I am not being practical, but I call it this as "living in the moment". I am fortunate that I found the purpose of my life in this planet Earth and I vow to spend my life doing things I love and believe is right. I hope more people will take the bold step to walk away from living by other people's shadow. "Little dream, no harm believing it."
